SPUREN DER ZUKUNFT

The “Spuren der Zukunft” revitalization project transforms an old railroad shed into a vibrant public urban space—a green oasis and open city hall in the heart of Stuttgart. Designed as a cultural hub and meeting place, it offers diverse uses and is fully accessible to both locals and visitors.

This urban space is being developed on the historic railroad tracks of Stuttgart’s terminus station, adjacent to the “Lichtaugen” (light wells) of the platform hall, and bordered by the Europaviertel and Schlossgarten. The existing historic steel structure of the platform roof and the old tracks establish a strong visual connection to the iconic Bonatzbau station building while creating an open layout that blends the bustling station with the dynamic life of the city. Climbing plants on the pillars and hanging greenery under the roof bring the natural beauty of the Schlossgarten into the space, transforming it into a tangible urban oasis. This inviting environment accommodates a variety of activities, including weekly markets and exhibitions, and remains open to everyone.

The glass roof of the historic structure, with its alternating heights, allows natural daylight to flood the space and features an innovative rooftop garden. This garden contributes to the city’s microclimate and is accessible via a sculptural staircase and an observation tower. In the evening, the observation tower serves as a luminous beacon visible across the city, becoming a new landmark for Stuttgart.

Adjacent to the Lichtaugen, a square with surrounding seating steps connects directly to the new underground platform hall. This space doubles as a stage for festivals and community events. Five modern pavilions, each featuring a rooftop terrace, will be constructed along the old tracks, replacing the former platforms. With transparent façades, these pavilions create a seamless dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, offering glimpses into their varied functions.

The pavilions are thoughtfully divided to cater to different purposes. On the western side, near the Europaviertel and the main railway station, two pavilions will house a tourist center, multifunctional rooms, and kiosks repurposed from recycled freight cars, emphasizing business and tourist services. In contrast, the eastern pavilions, alongside a water play area, will focus on recreation, offering opportunities for play, sports, gatherings, and relaxation.

The project symbolizes a harmonious evolution from an industrial track hall into a thriving urban oasis and open city hall. With its colorful program of activities and eco-friendly design, it fosters ecological and social development while serving as a dynamic new icon for Stuttgart. Aptly named “Spuren der Zukunft” (Traces of the Future), it promises to be a signature attraction and a source of pride for the city.
